Kayseri has always been one the most important centres in central Anatolia, because of its position at the junction of several ancient trade routes. In the early 3C AD Kayseri was an important Christian centere, and the seat of a bishop. The Christianization of Armenia was directed from here. Many buildings of the Seljuk period have survived.
